As part of our #blackhistorymonth spotlight we have another network of individuals to share today. culturalhealthclub was established in early 2020 and are a network of physiotherapists from range of BAME communities. They have five key purposes at their core: - Diversity - across physiotherapy profession - Empowerment - mentor and development opportunities - Elevate - number of BAME physios in senior positions and research - Equality - promote and increase health literacy in BAME communities - Integrity - maintain compassion and care. BACK TO UNI! 🎓 It was a pleasure 2 weeks ago to be asked to talk to students at uonphysiosr for the second time, with my brother lewiscrouchphysio representing culturalhealthclub at the place where we both secured our physiotherapy degree. Guess some would call it a full circle, especially to be back (virtually) less than 2 years since graduating. ⁣ 🔹We discussed the issues in Sport & physical activity and it’s culture in relation to ethnic minority populations and the difficulties they face to take part in sport and their own health, which are part of the issues we are aiming to combat through the culturalhealthclub ⁣ 🔹Our presentation focused on the importance of a physiotherapist in the sporting world and in society, the barriers & facilitators for these populations in physical activity, what we can ALL do to help eradicate bias & reflecting on our personal experiences playing/working in sport but also related a lot of these points back to the larger society too⁣ ⁣ 🔹 Above are 2 short clips answering a bit of a question about the different levels of racism and discrimination and how there can be a differences between being a professional VS an individual, guidelines on discrimination and some reasons on how we change our society for the better ⁣through our job ⁣ 🔹 If you or your organisation would like to work with us, please message myself, Lewis or the culturalhealthclub via DM 📥⁣ ⁣ #physiotherapy #physio #physicaltherapy #BAME #populations #university #studying #lecture #Education #culturalhealthclub

Name: Kiran Dhingra-Smith⁠ Age: 26⁠ Heritage: Indian and English ⁠ ⁠ Occupation:⁠ Band 5 physiotherapist at Whittington Health NHS Trust ⁠ Supervisor Family Liaison at West Ham ⁠ ⁠ Previous experience :⁠ BSc Sports Therapy⁠ Leyton Orient Multi-Sport Coach⁠ Sports Therapist at Bromsgrove FC and Team Birmingham (Basketball Division 2) ⁠ ⁠ Why CHC? ⁠ ⁠ Living in Newham I've been exposed to so many different ethnicities and cultures but going into physiotherapy I found myself to be a minority.⁠ This is reflected in research with major gaps when treating those of ethnic minority and no culturally appropriate interventions tailored to them. ⁠ During my Masters I researched and created a culturally sensitive treatment program to help South asian women living with diabetes. Meet the Members! Name: Imran Turay ⁠⁠ ⁠⁠ ⁠ Heritage: Sierra Leonean (British Born) ⁠⁠ ⁠⁠ Occupation: 2nd Year student at University of Essex ⁠⁠ ⁠⁠ Why CHC?: My main reason for wanting to join the CHC was to help contribute to creating opportunities for others. I decided to study Physiotherapy quite late, just a few weeks before the UCAS deadline actually. While creating my UCAS application and later attending interviews, universities were demanding that applicants had work experience. For someone in my position it was really daunting because I didn’t even have someone from the physiotherapy field to talk to about the profession, let alone someone to provide me with work experience. ⁠⁠ ⁠⁠ After just finishing my first year I realised how useful work experience and mentorship is. I often found myself comparing myself to my classmates because of their previous degrees as well as work experience in a health care setting. ⁠⁠ ⁠⁠ I feel the CHC has great potential to help redistribute opportunity within the Physiotherapy profession and I look forward to becoming a member.⁠⁠ ⁠⁠ ⁠⁠ #CulturalHealthClub #CHC #Health #Physiotherapy #Growth⁠ #Diversity #Inclusion
